EAT. DRINK. RELAX.
MY WORK REFLECTS MY HAITIAN-AMERICAN IDENTITY THROUGH THE ASSEMBLAGE OF URBAN AND TROPICAL SPACES RESEMBLING BOTH BROOKLYN AND HAITI.
AN INTEGRAL PART OF MY PROCESS IS CREATING AND WORKING FROM COLLAGED IMAGES TO INTENTIONALLY PAINT COMPLEX COMPOSITIONS OF UTOPIAN WORLDS. THESE UTOPIAN WORLDS EPITOMIZE MY UPBRINGING AS A FIRST GENERATION AMERICAN WHILE EVOKING THE FEELINGS OF FAMILIARITY AND NOSTALGIA.
THIS TECHNIQUE DEVELOPED IN AN ATTEMPT TO DISSECT MY ENVIRONMENT WHILE CONSTANTLY THINKING ABOUT ANOTHER. ULTIMATELY, I’M CONSTANTLY QUESTIONING WHAT IT MEANS TO BALANCE TWO DIFFERENT CULTURES WITH DISTINCT IDEOLOGIES. MY WORKS HIGHLIGHT A SERIES OF TRADITIONAL ARCHITECTURE, NATIVE PLANTS, GRAFFITI, TROPICAL AND GRUNGY SCENERIES THROUGH A PALETTE OF MUTED AND PASTEL COLORS EMBRACING CHARACTERISTICS OF MY HOME AND MY PARENTS NATIVE LAND.
